Relentless Complaints about Potholes Challenge La Mesa

by Lilit July 20, 2026

The city of La Mesa is facing a wave of complaints about the condition of its streets. Between January and June 2026, residents filed 130 reports related to potholes, covering more than 80 streets in the city. Potholes have become a persistent concern that affects drivers and residents daily. In an analysis of the complaints, Spring Street, especially at the intersections with highways I-8 and I-94, stood out as the road with the most complaints. The potholes are so notorious that one resident compared their size to that of a basketball, stating that it remains in the same condition since its first report in February. Despite the declared efforts by the municipality of La Mesa to repair the potholes within five days, many residents have pointed out that the response time is not met, especially on critical arteries like Spring Street. This situation has led to frustration as vehicle damage continues to accumulate, with some incidents involving blown tires. The lack of swift actions has led some residents to believe that certain streets are being ignored, as expressed in complaints about stretches like Woodyard Avenue. Others, concerned about deteriorating road safety, have warned about dangerous situations for drivers due to the poor condition of pavement. Such is the case of Lemon Avenue, where multiple potholes have been reported affecting the integrity of the roadway. Meanwhile, a look at the city’s infrastructure reveals that many of these streets were built more than four decades ago. This context presents an underlying challenge for La Mesa, which now faces the need to update and improve its road network to meet modern standards and ensure safe roads for all.
