The eagerly awaited Sail Boston event sets sail with its grand opening ceremony this Friday, as the city prepares to welcome an impressive fleet of tall ships arriving in Boston Harbor. The ceremonies will commence with a traditional blessing of the sails, followed by the vibrant presentation of flags from participating nations, heralding the start of a week rich in maritime culture and festivities. Spectators can look forward to the Parade of Sail on Saturday, a majestic arrival of over 50 ships from all over the globe as part of the Sail250 celebrations. Throughout the week, attendees will have the chance to board these historic vessels and partake in educational experiences focusing on both US and international nautical heritage. In a nod to history, the Mayflower II departed Plymouth to join the assembled fleet in Boston, with plans to return to its home port next Saturday. Adding to the maritime spectacle, the USS Arlington, a tribute to Arlington, Virginia's 9/11 first responders, docked at Black Falcon Terminal in time for the weekend showcase. Cape Cod witnessed its own preview celebration, as a fireboat's water cannons erupted in delight as numerous tall ships traversed the Cape Cod Canal en route to Boston. Beyond the spectacle on water, the festivities include dazzling nightly fireworks, scheduled for both Saturday and Wednesday, and on Tuesday, the Sail Boston Cup soccer tournament will unfold in honor of the World Cup. The festival of sails wraps up on Thursday when the majestic ships take to the seas once more.
