David Kampf, the seasoned 31-year-old forward known for his time in the NHL, has signed a three-year contract with HC Litvinov in the Czech Extraliga, marking a significant return to his homeland. This surprising move, disclosed via a team press release, follows speculation reported by Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic. Kampf had been part of a trade from the Washington Capitals to the Buffalo Sabres, which involved sending Alex Tuch to Washington. However, this transaction was primarily for balancing contract numbers, and the Sabres had no intention of signing Kampf, who was transitioning into free agency after a trying 2025-26 season. That season had seen Kampf beginning in the AHL, mutually terminating a contract to join the Canucks, and then playing just two games post a trade to Washington, a maneuver that landed Vancouver a 2026 sixth-round pick. Kampf candidly revealed, "I've been contemplating returning to the Czech Republic for quite some time; nine demanding years overseas has taken its toll. I felt the moment had arrived to come home and align with a team proximate to my roots. Chomutov plays in the first league, hence I chose Litvínov, a club I've cherished since childhood, attending games as a fan." He further expressed sentiments lost in his NHL journey, stating, "In recent years, hockey in the NHL morphed into just a job for me. I've missed enjoying the sport. I'm eager to receive ample playtime, rejuvenate my passion, and truly enjoy hockey once more." Kampf's decision reflects both personal and professional motivations, embracing a new chapter where he aims to rediscover his love for the game in familiar surroundings.
