Twins Strengthen Bullpen with Woo-Suk Go Acquisition

by Lilit July 5, 2026

In a strategic move aimed at bolstering their bullpen, the Minnesota Twins have completed a deal with the Detroit Tigers, acquiring right-hander Woo-Suk Go in exchange for cash considerations. The deal, reported by MLive Media Group's Evan Woodbery, involves Go moving to a club that is currently in fierce competition for an AL Wild Card spot. Although Go hadn't secured a spot on the Tigers' 40-man roster, contractual stipulations mean he will now be given that opportunity with the Twins, as confirmed by Dan Hayes of The Athletic. Woo-Suk Go's journey to the Twins began last December when he signed a non-roster deal with the Tigers. Despite not receiving a call-up to spring training, Go has made significant strides at Triple-A, boasting a stellar 2.60 ERA over 27 2/3 innings. His performance is further marked by an impressive strikeout rate of 29.1% and a commendable feat of allowing no home runs thus far this year. Although his .239 average against balls in play reflects some measure of good luck, Go's overall performance highlights his readiness to step up to the Majors. The Tigers, facing internal roster challenges, chose not to offer Go a spot, thereby presenting the Twins with an opportunity. Minnesota, seeking an upgrade for their underperforming bullpen, had an open slot on their 40-man roster, easing the transaction process. The Twins' bullpen has struggled, with only Andrew Morris standing out with a 3.04 xERA in 40 innings, while the team's 5.28 ERA and strikingly low ground ball rate position them among the lower echelon in the league. Go's inconsistent control since transitioning from Korea in 2024 hasn't overshadowed his ability to generate strikeouts and ground balls, skills that are particularly appealing to the Twins. With the team currently tied with the Astros, just two games shy of a Wild Card position after a recent win against the Yankees, the potential for Go to contribute significantly is high as the trade deadline approaches. The Twins view Go as a high-reward addition for a struggling bullpen, with his major league debut anticipated as early as Tuesday. Should the team falter, causing them to exit playoff contention, Go may have the opportunity to pitch more extensively through the remainder of the season. His previous experience of being outrighted by the Marlins in 2024 gives him the flexibility to decline future outright assignments. This strategic acquisition marks a pivotal moment as the Twins continue their pursuit of a postseason berth, integrating Go's skills in their attempt to shore up the bullpen and enhance their chances of success.
