Kerala Erupts as ED Probes Ex-CM in Alleged Money Laundering Case

by Lilit June 29, 2026

On May 28, 2026, Kerala experienced a significant increase in protests following enforcement actions related to the Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) money laundering investigation. The unrest was triggered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducting searches associated with former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The investigation is primarily focused on his daughter, Veena Vijayan, and financial dealings between her company, Exalogic Solutions Private Limited, and CMRL. The allegations suggest financial misconduct, claiming that the exchanged funds lacked legitimate service provisions, leading to an inquiry under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes throughout the state, with CPI(M) party members participating in aggressive protests outside Vijayan's residence. The unrest involved protestors throwing stones, helmets, and bottles, resulting in considerable property damage, including the vandalization of an ED vehicle. The retaliation was not limited to Kerala. National CPI(M) leaders, led by senior leader M. A. Baby, gathered in New Delhi, protesting in front of the ED's central office. These nationwide demonstrations highlight accusations that the ED's actions represent politically motivated harassment rather than unbiased justice. Critics claim that the timing and targeting of the ED's actions suspiciously coincide with upcoming state elections, further alleging misuse of federal agencies to suppress opposition voices. Nonetheless, the investigation continues, focusing on examining financial documents, communication records, and digital evidence that could support or disprove the accusations of illegal financial connections. Amidst this upheaval, Pinarayi Vijayan has not been officially implicated as an active participant in the alleged transactions.
