Colts Cornered: Jonathan Taylor's Contract Drama Unfolds Again

by Lilit June 24, 2026

The Indianapolis Colts are gearing up for the 2026 NFL season with a strong roster that could potentially dominate the AFC South. Their team is strengthened by quarterback Daniel Jones, who is aiming to make a Week 1 return after recovering from an Achilles injury, and wide receiver Alec Pierce, who recently signed a substantial four-year, $114 million contract. The lineup also includes last season's standout rookie Tyler Warren entering his second year, paired with a strong defense featuring players like DeForest Buckner, Laiatu Latu, and Sauce Gardner. However, the key player remains running back Jonathan Taylor, on whom the Colts' hopes for success heavily depend. As the season nears, contract negotiations are a top priority for the Colts, particularly concerning Taylor, whose 2025 performance was outstanding. He accumulated 1,585 rushing yards with 18 touchdowns, plus an additional 378 receiving yards and two touchdowns through the air. These achievements placed him third in the NFL for total scrimmage yards and first for scrimmage touchdowns. Despite Taylor's remarkable performance, the Colts' management has notably remained silent about his contract extension, causing concern among fans. Taylor's past experiences with the team regarding contract issues have been troubled, as seen in 2023 when negotiations stalled, leading him to request a trade after tense discussions with owner Jim Irsay. The impasse lasted into the regular season before a three-year, $42 million deal was eventually reached after he missed the opening games. Taylor's current average annual salary of $14 million ranks him behind six other prominent running backs, including Saquon Barkley, Christian McCaffrey, and De'Von Achane, all earning more. Given his recent accomplishments and as he approaches the critical age of 27—typically seen as a decline period for running backs—Taylor is understandably seeking a lucrative final contract. Therefore, the Colts face an important decision: will they secure Taylor's extension as a testament to their competitive ambitions, or will history repeat itself, casting uncertainty over what could be a pivotal season? Elsewhere in the league, attention is also on CJ Stroud as he prepares for a 'Prove-It' season with the Texans amid contract discussions, and the Patriots' Christian Gonzalez potentially becoming a hold-in before training camp starts. Additionally, the Bills are close to finalizing a productive extension with a key player protecting Josh Allen, boosting Buffalo's playoff hopes.
