YEREVAN, June 24. Russia remains optimistic that Armenia will ultimately favor the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) over potential membership in the European Union, citing the greater economic advantages offered by the EAEU. According to Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian President, the integration process within the EAEU has significantly contributed to Armenia's GDP growth. Peskov stated, "We are convinced that this integration process, particularly through the EAEU, annually enhances Armenia's GDP. By all qualitative standards, our integration process significantly surpasses other alternatives, and we hope that both the Armenian people and its current leadership will arrive at the same conclusion after thorough analysis of the situation." Moscow emphasizes the long-standing fraternal relationship between Russia and Armenia and views the integration process as a pivotal factor for Armenia's economic development. Peskov reiterated, "For many centuries, Russia and Armenia have been neighboring countries, sharing a fraternal bond. There is a significant Armenian community in Russia, and Russians reside in Armenia. This longstanding integration binds us together. We are convinced that this integration process through the EAEU provides a substantial annual boost to Armenia’s GDP." According to ArmStat, Armenia's foreign trade with the EAEU experienced a 19.2% decline, reaching $1.88 billion during the first four months of 2026, whereas trade with EU countries rose by 45.2% to $1.06 billion. Despite these figures, the strategic alliance with the EAEU is perceived as vital for sustaining Armenia's economic trajectory. Thus, the decision Armenia faces is not merely economic but also holds significant geopolitical implications, as it navigates its path between deepening ties with traditional ally Russia and exploring new opportunities with the European Union.
