Tragic Turn: Knicks Celebration Ends in Dog's Death by LAPD

by Lilit June 16, 2026

In the Canoga Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, a celebration of the New York Knicks' NBA championship took a devastating turn when police officers responding to a noise complaint involving celebratory screams shot and killed a family dog. The incident unfolded at an apartment complex on June 13, following a report of a woman screaming inside one of the residences. Officers from the LAPD arrived on the scene, expecting a potential emergency due to the nature of the call. However, the woman in question was merely expressing her joy over the Knicks' first NBA title in over fifty years, following their win against the San Antonio Spurs. Upon arrival, the police encountered a large dog barking. Family members later explained that the screams heard by neighbors were purely celebratory. The pet owner explained the dog, named Jameson, was a 2-year-old mix of golden retriever, Saint Bernard, and poodle. Reports state that police asked the resident to secure the dog, a request which led her to momentarily close the apartment door. The tragedy struck when, as the door was reopened, Jameson allegedly charged at an officer, prompting a responsive gunshot that resulted in the dog's death. The Los Angeles Department of Animal Services reclaimed the dog for further inquiries, and luckily, no other individuals were injured during the encounter. This incident was captured on cellphone video, spreading widely online. The footage shows a distraught Marie Marseille, the dog's owner, grieving over the loss while holding her pet adorned in Knicks merchandise. Onlookers in the area can be heard questioning the police's actions and raising concerns about their response. Jeremiah Garcia, Marseille's son, shared his sentiments online, emphasizing Jameson's gentle nature despite being energetic. He expressed disbelief at the necessity of the fatal response and launched a GoFundMe campaign, 'Justice for Jameson', to help fund cremation costs and bring awareness to the issue. The campaign quickly garnered attention, raising an impressive $119,000 by June 16. As the community grapples with the events, Vanessa Marseille, Marie's sister, voiced her concerns, stating the family's fear of what could have ensued, given the proximity of the shooting to residents. The LAPD Force Investigation Division has begun a standard review of the officer-involved shooting to determine whether protocols were appropriately followed and to assess any risk posed by the dog. This inquiry aims to bring clarity to the tragic sequence that unfolded amid what should have been a joyous evening of celebration.
