News - European politicians continue to call for sanctions on Azerbaijan, not to buy its natural gas

The European Union (EU) should impose sanctions against Azerbaijan, Lars Patrick Berg, a German member of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group of the European Parliament and a member of the latter's Committee on Foreign Affairs, stated about this in an interview with Tempi. He accused the EU of not protecting Armenians and preferring Azerbaijani natural gas supplies to the lives of innocent people. A cynic may think that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, considered Azerbaijani natural gas supplies more important than the lives of Armenians, Azerbaijani president Aliyev has never been a reliable partner, and sanctions are necessary, said Berg. Anton Hofreiter, an MP of the German Bundestag from The Greens party, also called for the EU to immediately impose sanctions against Azerbaijan. The Europeans should "force themselves to introduce economic sanctions, even if it will be difficult," he told the Funke media group newspapers. "We should stop buying [natural] gas from Azerbaijan as soon as possible," Hofreiter demanded. Azerbaijan's attack against Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) is "another example of the great danger of being dependent on a dictator." Instead of buying natural gas from authoritarian Azerbaijan, EU countries should "rely on other sources and, first of all, on renewable energy sources."
