Lithuania Launches €3 Million Defense Tech Initiative

by Lilit June 3, 2026

The Lithuanian government, through the Ministry of Economy and Innovation, led by Minister Edvinas Grishkas, has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing the country's technological defense capabilities. A strategic competition has been announced with a budget allocation of €3 million. The primary objective is to design and develop advanced tools that can effectively combat the threat posed by smuggling meteorological balloons and drone incursions, which have been identified as growing security challenges. The Ministry underscores the importance of innovative solutions that provide a comprehensive defense mechanism involving multiple layers and robust systems. The call for proposals emphasizes the need for systems that not only target balloons but also provide expansive air defense solutions against drones and other aerial threats, making the initiative both specific and adaptable to evolving security landscapes. Minister Grishkas outlined the government’s commitment to fostering a competitive and transparent bidding process. Companies interested in participating will soon have the opportunity to engage in a pre-competition procurement phase. This preparatory stage is designed to gather technical specifications and ensure that the technological requirements are met effectively and innovatively. Participation is open to past winners of similar tenders, allowing them to bring past experience and success to this project, while new companies are also encouraged to contribute novel ideas and solutions. This inclusive approach aims to elevate the standard of submissions and ensure that the best and most innovative solutions are harnessed. This initiative is seen as part of a broader national strategy to bolster Lithuania's resilience against unconventional threats and to secure its skies effectively. The Ministry notes that successful development of these technologies could significantly enhance the country's defense infrastructure, with potential applications extending beyond national borders to support international security efforts as well. The Lithuanian government remains steadfast in its mission to integrate cutting-edge technology into national defense frameworks, promoting peace and security. This €3 million venture represents a pivotal step in achieving these goals, reinforcing Lithuania’s position as a proactive and forward-thinking state in the realm of technological innovation and security.
