This recommendation comes after comprehensive analysis of observational research, which for the most part shows moderate caffeine intake correlates with lower risks of heart disease and stroke. However, caution is advised with higher caffeine levels, particularly from energy drinks, due to potential harm to the heart and blood vessels. Evidence also indicates that excessive caffeine can lead to increased blood pressure, especially among individuals with preexisting hypertension. The brewing method can impact coffee's effect on cholesterol; unfiltered coffee, rich in cafestol, can raise cholesterol levels. Therefore, Dr. Abdulla Damluji from the Cleveland Clinic advises opting for paper-filtered or instant coffee over unfiltered methods like French press or Turkish coffee. Chair of the guidance committee, Dr. Gregory Marcus, explains that individuals should base their caffeine consumption on personal tolerance and not exceed what feels comfortable. Moreover, Dr. Marcus emphasizes that the aim should not be to increase caffeine intake for health benefits beyond what the body naturally tolerates. Future research is encouraged to isolate caffeine impacts from other beverage additives and explore the benefits of introducing coffee to non-drinkers. Despite the generally favorable statement regarding coffee, the AHA maintains a conservative stance on caffeine for children and those with severe hypertension, drawing from past guidance.
